About Cole Family Tree
This is the family history of my COLE family and many of the families connected to
them, particularly the PALMER, CALLOW, BRADLEY, APPLETON, DAVIS and WELCH families who
were my great-grandparents.
LATEST NEWS
BRADLEY/WALLIS
I am excited to be in touch with the Wallis family, whom I remember from my childhood.
They are the descendants of Mary Ann Bradley who was my mother's father's eldest
sister. Her daughter Patricia (christened Edna) lives in Wisconsin, another daughter
Bonnie (Monica Marie) has sadly died but I am in touch with her daughter Julie Anne in
Australia. I hope to add more details of the family to the tree soon.
APPLETON
I have discovered the first-born son of William Taylor Appleton who was born in
Harwich, Essex so it seems that the family came from Essex originally and not Kent as
I thought. I hope to have more information soon.
BRADLEY/DUNCUMB - Sadly I have to report the death on 14 January 2008 of my great-aunt
Cordelia Duncumb (nee Bradley) at the age of 98. She was a remarkable lady who had
five children and led an active life despite having a disability from childhood. My
condolences go to all her family.
PALMER
On a happier note I am delighted to welcome two new Palmer arrivals, twins Blake and
Fern Palmer born 7 February 2008 to Ian Palmer and his wife Emily.
THANK YOU
In compiling this tree I have had a lot of help from other people who have allowed me
access to their research and their trees. I could not have done it without their help
and I hope I have been able to help them and others in return.
DISCLAIMER
I have not yet been able to double-check all the information I have been given so
cannot guarantee all of it, please regard this site as a work in progress. If you are
interested in a particular family please contact me regarding my sources.
THE FAMILIES
My earliest COLE ancestor, William, an Agricultural Labourer, was living in Navestock,
Essex in 1796 when he married Sarah SALTWELL from nearby Blackmore. A few years later
William and Sarah moved to Doddinghurst and many of their descendants stayed in the
area (I am told there are still Coles in Doddinghurst) with some moving East to
Chelmsford and Harwich. My line had moved to Ilford by the time of the 1901 census.
The PALMER family came from Deptford, which at that time was in Kent. They worked in
the dockyards and some were Lightermen working on the Thames barges. My Great-
grandfather was a Steward on S.S. Condor. He married Charlotte Callow.
The CALLOW family were Bakers who came from Dartford, Kent.
The BRADLEY family came from Bermondsey, which was in Surrey at that time. My Great-
great-grandfather, a Ropemaker, brought up his family in Poplar/Stratford in East
London. His son Thomas emigrated to Australia and I am in touch with Bradley
descendants there. My Great-grandfather was a Stevedore in the East London docks and
several of his sons, including my Grandfather William, worked for Tate & Lyle in
Silvertown. His sisters married into the WALLIS, DUNCUMB and WALDIE families and some
of these families' ancestors are on the tree.
The APPLETON family were fishermen from the Gravesend area of Kent (but see NEWS
above). My line moved up the Thames to Limehouse, again they lived and worked on or
alongside the river.
The DAVIS family came from the Ross-on-Wye area of Gloucestershire. John Davis was a
Blacksmith and later became a Bookseller in nearby Stroud. His children all became
servants in London. Three sons, including my great-great-great-grandfather, Alfred,
later went into business in West Ham. Several Davises have emigrated to Ontario,
Canada, both in the past and more recently, and I am in touch with Davis descendants
there.
The WELLMAN family are a bit of a mystery so far. According to Emma's marriage
certificate her father was James Wellman, occupation Exciseman. There is a
christening record in Shoreditch of Emma Wellman born to a James and Margaret
Wellman. However I have not yet found the family recorded in any census.
I have also included some of the BLYTHE/CRAFER/HARRISON (Norfolk) and the
FRALEY/JONES/HADNOT (Trowbridge and Wales), families who are my son John's
ancestors through his father's line.
My husband's KRISHNAN line are here too. The information is from family records and
relatives' memories and dates have not been checked with official records. There are
some interesting stories here about his granny meeting the Prince of Wales and an
ancestor who cured the Rajah of Jaipur's son of an illness and earned the hereditary
title of "Jaipur" which was last used by my father-in-law.
I hope you enjoy the site.
